What is chiropractic?

“Chiropractic specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of biomechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, particularly those involving the spine and their effects on the nervous system.”

Chiropractic originated in 1895 in the USA, where differing traditions employ varying techniques, but all with the same aims of:

·        correctly aligning the bones of the spine and other joints of the body

·        restoring nerve function

·        alleviating pain

·        promoting natural health

All the organs and cells in the body require message from the brain to function correctly; this information is sent via the nerves, most of which pass through the spinal cord.  Slight misalignments or malfunctions of the vertebrae can adversely affect the quality of the messages sent, causing discomfort, pain or disease, which is often some distance away from the source of the problem.  (Imagine a hosepipe with water flowing through it – when there is a kink at any point in the hosepipe, the water flowing from the far end is reduced or perhaps stopped completely; once the kink is straightened out, the water flows again.)

McTimoney Chiropractic is a unique branch of the chiropractic profession in the UK.  The technique is named after its originator, John McTimoney, who developed his whole-body style of treatment from those techniques originally taught at the first college of chiropractic.  It offers a refined, effective and safe treatment, which is suitable for anyone – including babies, pregnant women, and the elderly.  It uses no instruments other than the hands of the practitioner.  It can seem so light as to be incapable of producing any effect whatsoever, but the speed, dexterity and accuracy of the adjustments are extremely effective and comfortable to receive.
