Chiropractic during pregnancy and after |
|
The body obviously changes during pregnancy. The body’s ligaments become slack and the joints move more easily. The birth of a baby sometimes causes misalignment of the vertebrae in the spine, which can cause various aches and pains and also post natal depression. Many women describe a sensation of feeling strange and ‘all wrong’. This condition usually responds well to chiropractic treatment, often with only one or two treatments. Babies who are restless in some way – crying or not feeding well – are best treated before they are 6 weeks old, but can of course be treated later |
Case historyAn eight-month pregnant mother This poor woman had been using crutches to walk for most of her pregnancy, due to an inability to take weight on her legs. The hospital was unable to find any reason for her pain and walking problems. Chiropractic treatment was initially delayed by two weeks as a precaution, in case treatment at eight months started her contractions early. Two weeks later she returned to the clinic and, after three treatments, was free from pain and able to walk normally. After delivery of a beautiful baby boy, she returned to the clinic on crutches again. Some spinal misalignment had occurred during delivery. After two further treatments, she was free from pain and walking normally again. During her first postnatal visit, it transpired that her four day old baby was still unable to suck. He was very hungry – and his parents were very short of sleep! Just one gentle adjustment to the baby’s cranial bones changed his life before his mother’s eyes. The relief on the baby’s face was visible; he was instinctively sucking at the next feed, and never looked back. His parents were thrilled to get a good night’s sleep!
