After your treatmentTreatment is a partnership between chiropractor and patient – whilst the chiropractor will provide the treatment, its effectiveness can be reduced if the patient is not fully aware of the importance of following advice given after treatment. Listen to your body If you had a grazed knee, you would be foolish to continue kneeling on it before it was healed – healing is after all a process not an event. So it is with chiropractic: your treatment is the start of a process. Listen to your body and treat it gently during the recovery period. Try to avoid doing anything that causes pain or discomfort. Allow your body to heal itself. Feeling worse before you feel better It is not abnormal to feel worse before you feel better, although many patients feel instant relief from pain with no ill effects. However, changes in muscle tension, and positional changes in the body, can create new aches and pains, or cause familiar ones to recur. A range of sensations may occur after treatment while your body adjusts to its new alignment, including: · stiffness or aching – often in different areas of the body · tiredness · mild nausea or headaches – as waste products are released during the healing process · dizziness – due to release of tension · emotional changes – reflecting the release of tension · menstrual changes – e.g. heavier or lighter periods Changes settle once the body has adjusted to its correct alignment.
